The Unimaginable Burden:
Imagine you were alive in 1940 and you met a time traveler from the future who brought you back an iPad containing images and information on everything transpiring during the Holocaust. You saw the mass graves, the gas chambers, the torments, the destruction of families, the science experiments being conducted on the victims, and everything that was happening during this horrible moment in history. Imagine having that information but little to no power to change things. And everyone you tried to share this information with either ignored you or said some cruel thing about Jews to make light of the possibility that they might truly be suffering in the concentration camps. So, you carried this burden with you every moment of your life. Knowing that millions and millions were suffering beyond anything you could fathom, and yet you were powerless or not wise enough to make it stop. Instead, you had to carry around the weight of knowing that the unthinkable was going on and that the people around you were unwilling to learn the truth (even though they likely knew it was such) because they didn't want to have to carry that burden or possibly leave their comfort zone to stand up for justice. Your life would be devastated. All that once brought you joy is now poisoned by knowing that the world was filled with more misery than one could come to terms with. And knowing that so few were willing to stand up against injustice or to accept the truth even when shown all the evidence, how do you continue to look at your fellow humans without questioning their decency and morals if they are so willing to look other way or worse willing participants in causing the misery you have learned about?
Well, this is exactly what it is like to be a vegan activist. Every human has at their finger tips access to every image, video, and detail of what is happening to animals. They have the scientific information detailing the mental abilities and emotional capacities of animals. Every detail of the suffering and torment of animals is readily available and very few if any humans don't know that they can easily access this information. Yet, they choose to remain willfully ignorant. They choose to allow the suffering to continue. They allow the eternal animal holocaust to be lived and relived by generation after generation of animal. And they do nothing. And you are powerless to make it stop. We have the advantage of living in an era when every bit of information is there for the taking and yet our fellow man has shown himself morally bankrupt by deciding that giving up bacon, cheese or eggs is not something they are willing to do, the suffering billions be damned. I must live in a world where allowing the holocaust to continue is the accepted price of going about life as normal. That is the burden of a vegan advocate.
