Nothing says 'Compassionate and Humane' like making a calf wear the skin of her brother.
Justifications for this include:
- Easier on the farmer planning to exploit these animals to not have to bottle feed another baby that may have been intended to be raised for beef or veal.
- Tricks mother calf into raising a baby that was not her own that will eventually be used as her replacement when she is spent.
Story Dairy Farmers Tell Themselves:
It is their love of the animals the exploit that drives them to help a grieving mother find happiness again by getting her to adopt a new child. (Strangely they fail to include the part where they exploit both of these animals for their profit and then slaughter them the minute they are used up... which is a strange definition of 'love of the animals'.)
The person demonstrating this process bragged about how much money he 'netted' selling the body parts of the calves he does this to. Clearly, done out of love (of money - not animals).
If you drive by a dairy farm and it smells, it's not the cows. The dairy farmers are shitting their pants because dairy is dying.
The profits from sales of these will go directly towards helping animals everywhere!

Animal agriculture is a major perpetrator of classism and racism within our society. Too often, the CEOs and chief officers of these corporations make a snowstorm look multicultural and these people profit off the labors of people of color and migrant ethnic minorities. These low paid workers are trapped into these jobs and forced to do cruel and inhuman acts towards animals because as a society we want to deny that it is happening to animals and how better than to have work done by marginalized groups within our society whose voices are silenced by poverty and racism. So rather than help these groups of marginalized people find better jobs that don't involve dehumanizing acts of violence, our society actually prefers to leave them trapped and pass it off as if companies like Smithfield and Tyson are saviors to marginalized people. And this shields us from our guilt over the treatment of these individuals by our society and keeps the blood of animals off our privileged hands. And if we do feel any guilt over our speciesist treatment of animals, we further our classist discrimination by offering rich people expensive animal products with fancy bullshit labels like organic, free-ranged, and grass-fed while relegating marginalized people to being the bad guys still supporting the 'cruel and inhumane' forms of meat that our government misleads them into thinking they need for their health through compromised dietary training sponsored by the companies already abusing these people through relegating them to these low paying and dignity destroying jobs. So, while you pat yourself on the back for supporting the jobs of marginalized people through your support of companies like Smithfield Pork Producers, in actuality you are just helping to keep the status quo of a bunch of rich white people profiting off the inhuman labors forced upon marginalized people through lack of other opportunities and the threat of eviction or unemployment. It is time we stand up to these corporations and move towards a society where we don't ease our conscience by asking marginalized people to do the unconscionable acts we'd rather pretend aren't happening. Just because the sweatshops aren't labored by Chinese children overseas, doesn't make them any less awful. It is time we stopped pretending that anything trickles down except the overflow of pig shit onto the land and water of less privilege people. If all democracy does is protect the wealth of the rich against the needs of the poor often at the expense of animals... maybe we need to change things. We must work as a society to make sure that the dignity of all living beings is given equal consideration.
