Why 12-18-21? Why not any other day? There are lots of reasons that I like this date. I like that all the numbers are multiples of 3. I like the way the numbers roll off the tongue as they build higher and higher. I like that the month and the year are symmetrical. But ultimately, I picked it because it didn't have any other connection to any specific animal species or event related to animal rights. It simply represents the day that we will march on D.C. as a united vegan movement to either celebrate the end of animal abuse and slavery or the day we declare the escalation of our revolution so that it is clear to all the death knell of animal abuse has rung loud and clear. Either way, it will be a historic moment that will change the world forever and mark the end of animals used for food, entertainment, hunting and clothing.
Why set a date at all? Why not just keep working towards the goal of ending animal abuse and slavery? Because we need a target. A deadline tells us how long we have to achieve our goal so that it doesn't drag on and on endlessly. Even waiting that long seems too long when considering that over 300 billion animals will have been slaughtered in that time alone. We cannot let this continue indefinitely as we feel around in the dark for some magical solution. We must build up to a deafening crescendo of voices demanding that it end now.
What can you do to make this happen? This is all about cooperation and collaboration. That doesn't mean we have to agree on an approach. I want DxE, PeTA, F.A.R.M., Vegan Outreach, etc. all to continue doing what they think is the best approach to reaching this goal. The only thing we have to agree on is 12-18-21 as Animal Liberation Day. And everyone out there not affiliated with a certain organization, it is you that so much depends. It is on you to decide how best you can make this happen. And then share your ideas. Work together with other vegans to make your ideas happen. Learn from each other. Adapt to new circumstances. And in the end, with all of us focusing on making 12-18-21 the day of days in the Vegan Revolution, we cannot help but succeed if we only believe that we can and that we will. And I believe both. I know that the vegans I interact with on a regular basis are the most caring and devoted people I have ever met. I will be working on a plan for how I think we can make this happen in the coming weeks, but I will be open to suggestions, feedback and plan to learn from everyone joining in on this crusade. Together we cannot fail. Our cause is too just and our passion too strong!
